01 / ACADEMIC PROFILE

Nordic perspective: A cross-cultural intellectual horizon.

Gao Yuan works at the intersection of the History of European Intellectual Traditions, European Philosophy of Emotions, and Nordic Area Studies.

He received his doctoral training at the University of Helsinki under the supervision of Simo Knuuttila and Miikka Ruokanen. His research examines how philosophical ideas develop within traditions and travel across languages and cultural settings.

He is an associate professor and research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in European Culture, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

02 / STRATEGIC RESEARCH & INTERDISCIPLINARY INQUIRY

Connecting intellectual traditions
with contemporary strategic questions.

Gao Yuan’s research engages with major national strategic priorities—including the Maritime and Polar Silk Roads, the vision of an Arctic community with a shared future, and Arctic governance—by bringing area studies, artificial intelligence, specialist research on understudied intellectual traditions, and national strategy into dialogue.

He has published more than 50 research articles in CSSCI- and A&HCI-indexed journals, while securing multiple national and international-level research grants in China and Europe. This sustained record of research and project development reflects an interdisciplinary scholarly profile that combines historical depth, cross-cultural inquiry, and engagement with strategic questions.

Across research projects in China and the Nordic region, Prof. Gao Yuan seeks to move beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries in European studies. His work connects European philosophical traditions and civilizational exchange with European area studies, the maritime and polar digital Silk Roads, and questions concerning the Arctic’s shared future.

Within a comparative Sino-European framework, particular attention is given to the intellectual foundations of European values and to overlooked sources in less widely studied Nordic languages. Close textual analysis and historical reconstruction provide the basis for a detailed, systematic understanding of these resources and their relevance to contemporary intercultural dialogue.
